I'm pretty sure that you were correct -- it wasn't a tar file that was being decompressed, and the error message was the same as reported in this thread:
Extraction of "FILE" failed
Error code 1 using "kekaunar"
Unknown error
input file was a zip and the output was a pdf

Hello,
I'm trying to access a locked ZIP file and using Keka and was getting Error code 1, as in the thread above. It unlocked the file structure of the folder, including the files, but they have not data value. All at 0 bytes. I tried the command in Step 1 (possibly incorrectly) and it did the same, but I now get Error code 2 using "p7zip" Fatal error.
Would anybody be able to help?
Thanks,

gunwind, most probably you have the wrong password. Can you share the file?

I am trying to clarify the password. The contents are images from a CT scan, and I think the hospital has written down the wrong password. I have tried to contact them, but there's a delay in responding. And they have bigger things to worry about at the moment! So I was just trying to bypass the password. I'd rather not share, as I'm not sure what personal information it contains, other than a CT scan of my neck!

gunwind, just wait for the proper password or ask them to send the file again then. Now patience

I had exactly the same problem where I wasn't allowed to enter the password needed to reconstruct the .zip file. I was able to use the fix specified in this thread, and was able to open the file, but it took me a long time to locate this fix. The error message that is reported is: exactly as this github entry entry 134 ("unknown error" error code 1 using kekatar) but no clue that it is related to the password auto clicker

elparadika, thanks for the feedback! It’s strange your case given that Keka tried to extract it using TAR. You’ve made it?
